The NEAR spacecraft landed on an asteriod, 433 Eros. It's a Mars-crosser asteriod, comes within orbit of Mars. It will remain there until it is disturbed by gravitational interactions. And can be an earth-crosser if there is some dynamics gravitational interactions. (en.wikipedia.org)
