Halley's Comet was known probably since 1059 B.C. Halley calculated its orbit and would return once every 76 years.

He predicts the return of Halley's Comet in 1758 which was verified by Johann Palitzsch on that year itself. Halley died in 1742 and did not see his prediction fulfilled.(Credit:solarviews.com )
