Kepler spacecraft is a space telescope which surveys a part of the Milky Way for earth-size exoplanets or near habitable zones.

It has a photometer which monitors the brightness of over 145,000 main sequence stars in a fixed field of view. The data are send back to earth and analyse to find out any dimming made by the exoplanet that crosses in front of their star. wikipedia
