There are various factors that influence the wine characteristics such as flavors, wine region, acidity, sweetness, tannins and body. Basically there are six types of wine:
1. Red Wine – made from fermenting black grapes with skin (red is the grape skin colour which give the colour of the wine). It is high in tannins and gives the bitter and dry taste. Examples: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir.
2. White Wine – are made from fermenting white and black grapes without the skin. The clear grape juice is used. It has few tannins, its acidicity nature gives its fresh, crisp and tart flavour. Examples: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling
3. Rose Wine – the wine is pink in colour. It is made from fermenting black grape juice with the skins for a short time, from a few hours to few days until the juice turns colour. It was thought that rose is created from mixing red and white wine but actually it's not the case.
4. Sparkling Wine-it is a carbonate wine and is made from black and white grapes, and carbon dioxide a byproduct of fermentation. Examples: Champagne and Prosecco.
5. Dessert Wine-is produced in a number of ways. One of the method is stopping the fermentation early so that the yeast doesn't consume all the sugar. Or it could be sweetened through fortifying-adding alcohol (brandy) before all sugar is fermented. It's usually drunk after meals. Examples: Icewine and Moscato.
6. Fortified Wine-is wine with adding spirits during fermentation process. The wine with higher percentage of alcohol is considered fortified wine. Examples: Port, Sherry, Madeira and Marsala
